MOODY BLUES

Maybe it’s all the rain we’re finally having here in San Francisco but my mood is turning towards these moody rooms inspired by Farrow & Ball’s Hague Blue paint featured in last month’s Elle Decor issue. I’ve been staring at this image above my desk for weeks now, as much as I lean toward modern, I love the drama this color evokes in the space. Now, I just have to figure out how I’m going to use this color on my next design project…

BACK TO BLACK

“Have a touch of black in every room, and use at least one antique to give the room soul.”

SHAKER STYLE

“A HIGHLY IMITATED DESIGN AESTHETIC, A NONMATERIALISTIC LIFESTYLE, SPIRITUAL EQUALITY AND THE INVENTION OF THE CLOTHESPIN, PEN NIB AND APPLE CORER: THESE ARE JUST A FEW REASONS TO APPRECIATE WHAT THE SHAKERS LEFT BEHIND.”             – Katie Searle-Williams

The winter edition of Kinfolk – The Aged Issue- is dedicated to all things that get better with time: family, food, and good design. While the tenth edition explores all the different arenas of how are lives are enriched by people and tradition, I decided to focus on design. No matter what the focus, everything gets better with time- as long as we know how to care for it.

WHAT I’M READING: The Meaning of Home

Ever since I first say Jeffrey Alan Marks on Bravo’s Million Dollar Decorators, I’ve come to love his style. He has the ability to design a space with such effortless sophistication- a casual yet refined style that is so indicative of his California roots. His rooms are fresh; with a real lived-in feel yet he knows precisely how far to go without going overboard; something I truly admire in him as a designer. It also doesn’t hurt that he has two of the most adorable Labrador’s; which anyone who knows me knows I’m obsessed with!

STYLE: FALL INSPIRED

September has arrived. Which means fall for most people but here in San Francisco it’s the start of our summer… My trip to Mendocino is planned and I’m dreaming of apple picking, cider making, cozy blankets and cool nights. Not to mention the start of fall fashion- tweed, cashmere, and lots of layers…

Here are some of things I’m lovin

ON THE MOVE

Next month I will be moving into my new place in San Francisco. I’ve got less than thirty days to figure it all out. I’ve been thinking lately about the time when I was eighteen and first moved to New York- I started practicing yoga and reading eastern religion- my world changed. I somehow didn’t feel the need or attachment to all the stuff I had around me (it’s the usual story) so in the days that followed, I loaded up most of my clothes and things I accumulated and handed them out to friends and strangers. For the good part of my twenties I didn’t have more than a backpack to my name… I loved it.
